Guinea Pig Gets Pilot’s License, Starts Charter Business

Simba, a guinea pig from Forest Hills, NJ, fulfilled a lifelong dream last week when he aced his pilot’s exam. The piggy has also secured funding to launch a charter service.

The service, which operates out of Teterboro Airport, flies internationally on a modified Barbie Edition Boeing 727.

“It’s a bit dated,” said aviation expert Jane Ciabattari. “But Simba’s really tricked out the interior, and it’s super roomy. He can still charge top dollar and attract high profile clients, even if the plane itself is an older model.”

His first client is Roc-a-Chilla, Jay-Z’s pet chinchilla.

Hedgehog Travelogue Takes Blogging World by Storm

Plenty of hedgehogs travel the world, but few document their exploits with selfies. Biddy is the notable exception.

He’s toured more than 20 U.S. national parks and seen world monuments few would dream of. But he’s really captured the Internet’s attention with his popular website: Biddy’s Hedgehog Travelogue Blog.

“He’s also huge on Instagram,” says Darren Oslo, social media editor for the Washington Post. "Basically, any social network where he can post a selfie in front of a waterfall and brag about the view, he’s popular there.“

Starbucks Executives Rethink “Hamster Latte” Promotion

Buy a latte, get a hamster. It seemed so simple, and the concept had massive support on the My Starbucks Ideas site. But nevertheless, Starbucks has announced that it has scrapped the promotional program, which was set to launch early next year.

“It turns out there are a lot of logistical and ethical issues with the hamster program,” explained Starbucks EVP of Marketing and Promotions, Eric Barteau.

One of the major problems is that the program just couldn’t scale. 

“Finding a provider of hamsters, ethically and humanely sourced, at the scale we operate on at Starbucks – 2 million lattes a day – is really difficult,” said Barteau.

Further, internal customer research found that most people don’t actually want a furry rodent in the same cup they’re drinking from. And there was an issue of giving hamsters to people who didn’t want a pet and daily customers who might end up with tens or even hundreds of hamsters by the end of the promotion.

“Honestly, it was just really poorly thought out,” Barteau said. “I don’t know what we were thinking.”
