Pug Pair Break Land Speed Record With Homemade Racers

July 15, 2015 · Leave a Comment

At an unheralded event in Massachusetts, two pugs have narrowly broken the world record for the top speed of a land vehicle.

The previous record, held for 18 years by a British Airforce pilot, was surpassed early Tuesday morning by Mowgli, a Boston pug who’s homemade racer topped out at 763.041 miles per hour (squeaking past the record of 763.035 mph).

“This is a huge day, not just for the record, but for the entire canine racing community,” says Ross Glover, a spokesperson for the dogs.

Mowgli’s engineering partner Penelope will also share the spoils of the record, which include a substantial cash prize, in addition to being recorded in the history books.

Tiny Pup Has Big Dreams of Basketball Stardom

July 13, 2015 · Leave a Comment

By Austin Knief, FluffPo Contributor

Kirby, a small white terrier from the Bronx, has had dreams of becoming a basketball superstar since the first time he touched a squeaky ball. Kirby’s fire and intensity, according to trainer/ life coach Mark Morabini, stems from a viewing of Air Bud that took place nearly two years ago.

“Air Bud is the perfect underdog story,” said Morabini. “I mean, sure I had my doubts about putting a dog on a basketball court. But after I saw that film, I immediately brought Kirby out onto the hardwood and we got to work. He’s small, but he’s scrappy and hard-working. That’s what you look for in a Canine-American athlete.”

Morabini also added that Kirby does not wish to be referred to as “underdog” for undisclosed reasons.

NY Times at It Again with Bizarre Guinea Pig Cherry Tweet

July 8, 2015 · Leave a Comment

image

Just a week after the New York Times told the world via Twitter to add peas to their guacamole and the Internet had a collective freakout, the paper of record is at it again. This time, the paper’s Twitter account sent out a bizarre tweet this morning about putting a cherry on top of guinea pigs.

image

Obviously, this isn’t a recipe and the newspaper doesn’t expect us to eat guinea pigs – the link goes to an article in the Times Style section about avant-garde guinea pig fashion – but this is nonetheless a second strange tweet in as many weeks from the paper. The response has been predictably mixed.

“LOL, wut? No piggy I know would be caught dead wearing a cherry as a hat!!” tweeted noted guinea pig fashion expert, and Vogue contributor Miles Jones.

“I mean, I guess kind of cute. But what the heck, @nytimes?” responded Fashionista pets editor Tawny Chu.

Even President Barack Obama weighed in, tweeting: “@nytimes Love and respect you, but this just looks weird.”

We’re left wondering, who is running the social accounts at The New York Times these days?
