Evolutionary Biologists Say Cats May Walk Upright Within 700,000 Years

February 19, 2012 · Leave a Comment

New research from the University of Paris suggests cat evolution is trending toward upright posture.

“More and more, we are seeing cats gaining survival advantages when they stand on their hind legs,” says Michel Ager, an evolutionary biologist involved in the study. “The increased height and potential use of the forearms is akin to the trajectory we’ve observed in primate evolution.”

But don’t expect to see cats walking around with top hats and canes anytime soon. Given their rate of reproduction and genomic resistance to mutation, Ager says it may take between 700,000 and 1 million years for any meaningful species differentiation to occur.
