A four month study following a large test group of cats in the wild has confirmed what many have long suspected: cats can be – and often are – total jerks.
“We observed cats clawing furniture, peeing in potted plants, knocking pens off of tables, knocking each other off of tables, knocking food off of tables, knocking – well, knocking pretty much everything off tables,” said lead researcher Kyle Davy-Watkins of the Feline Behavior Institute at Cornell University.
The study, which is being released next week in the journal of feline research Purr, tracked 120 cats in the Ithaca, NY area for four months.
“We concluded that cats are totally class-A jerk faces,” said Davy-Watkins. “They can certainly be sweet as well, but on their own terms and usually not for extended periods of time. We feel comfortable saying that all cats possess the innate capacity for jerkiness, and most use it at least some of the time.”
