Canine Coders Pull All-Nighter to Hack New App
In the fast-paced world of tech startups, you’ve got to be lean, fast and willing to write code for 24-hours straight.
That’s what the pups over at BarkMe did Thursday night. The dog-owned mobile development company, based in New York City, held an internal hack-a-thon to generate prototypes for products they hope will disrupt the mobile marketplace in 2013.
“I think they really hit on something last night,” says Jamie Jenson, the startup’s PR rep. “It’s tentatively called ScentKeeper, and it’s a location-based social network for dogs, where users mark the spot they’ve peed on a map, and others can discover pee spots nearby. It really has the potential to save pups a lot of time sniffing out their friends’ pee. ”
The app piggybacks on the infrastructure of Google Maps and popular checkin service Foursquare to deliver location results to dogs who share a social link. BarkMe hopes to release a beta version for iOS devices this spring.

On a cold winter’s evening, the transition from over the covers to under can be a traumatic one.
“If the room is chilly, it can be like climbing into a freezer – at first,” says Leonard Diamond. “You’ve got to tough it out. If you have patience, you’ll warm up nice and toasty in no time.”
But a cat named Gus doesn’t share this philosophy. He climbs under the covers every night with a pair of socks on to kill the chill. That’s not such a controversial practice, except…
“The socks come off under the covers during the night,” says Diamond. “Sometimes there are 20 pairs under there at any time. It’s a big stinky mess, and I wish he would kick this bad habit.”

Facebook addiction is a growing problem among adorable puppies, which is why one dog is being proactive. Bailey, a super cute, 5-month-old Maltese, had already begun to feel that Facebook was taking up too much of his time.
So, starting next week, Bailey is pledging to sever ties with the service for at least a year. He’ll deactivate his account and stop surfing to Facebook pages until he’s at least 17 months old.
“He felt like he was always on there, you know?” said Lawrence Fishel, a source close to the situation. “It got to the point where we’d be playing fetch, I’d throw the stick and he wouldn’t even budge, he’d just have his nose buried in his iPhone. Checking Facebook. Posting status updates. ‘I’m about to go chase a stick.’ It was starting to affect the quality of his life.”
