Morkie Cast as Yoda in ‘Star Wars VII’

After Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and its venerable Star Wars franchise, there has been much speculation about the future of the film series. When sci-fi director J.J. Abrams was tapped to reboot the next chapter of the space saga, fans breathed a cautious sigh of relief. But not much is known about the pre-production of Episode VII – that is, until now.

“We’re thrilled to announce that Master Yoda will be played by Franklin, a fresh-faced morkie from New York City,” reads a press release from Lucasfilm, issued this morning. “We think this choice will inject new life into the classic Star Wars character. Mr. Abrams is very excited to work with him.”

Fans of the movies will be quick to point out that Yoda dies in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. The release addresses this point:

“Though Yoda passes on, he becomes one with The Force, and Mr. Abrams is looking forward to exploring his character as a ‘Force Ghost.’”

Early fan reaction to the relatively unknown canine actor has been mixed.

“I can’t say I’m thrilled about a dog playing Yoda,” says Kenny Horvath, who moderates a popular Star Wars message board on the Internet. “But at least it’s not Ben Affleck.”

Cat Receives Secret Transmission From Rebel Alliance

A San Francisco-based cat named Mowgli has come into possession of an R2-series droid whose memory banks contain some sort of distress call, according to witnesses.

“It shows this hologram thing of some girl,” says Phil Cavanaugh, a friend of the cat who accidentally triggered the message while tinkering with the robot. “Something about Moby Don Shinobi? I don’t know, I wasn’t really paying attention. The thing makes a great scratching post, though.”

Local Dog Saves R2 Unit

A local dog is being hailed as a hero tonight after carrying a busted R2-series astromech droid over 50 miles across the desert on his back.  "A lot of people are going to say he was just doing what any loyal dog would do,“ said a source close to the situation.  "But think about what he did – those R2 units, especially the older models, weigh a ton.  Literally, they weight like two thousand pounds.  To carry one that far?  It’s nothing short of miraculous.”

The dog will be given a $5,000 reward and the key to the planet of Naboo as thanks for saving the valuable robot.

Cat Is Unimpressed by Death Star

An area cat reportedly thinks the Death Star is “no big deal.”  According to friends, Tima the cat just feels that way too much attention is paid to the giant star ship.

“I think she’s just a little nonplussed, to be honest,” says Roger Anker, a long-time friend and confidant to Tima.  "I mean, it only took her two weeks to make her Death Star – and she built it from a kit.  So I think she’s just like, ‘Who cares?’“

New Puppy Landspeeders Are More Efficient

Anti-Gravity Car & Driver magazine is reporting that the new XP-34 puppy landspeeders are more fuel efficient than non-puppy versions of the craft.  According to a press release from the Naboo-based Landspeed, Inc. (a division of General Motors), the puppy speeders use a newly designed version of the “repulsorlift” engine that is powered completely by kibble.

The puppy landspeeders will be on sale after the annual Galactic Empire auto show on Chandrila in June.
