Cat Fired from DMV for Sleeping on the Job

After five months on the job, Socks the cat was fired from his administrative position at the Chicago Department of Motor Vehicles for his tendency to doze off at his desk.

Office manager Jeni Meyer told The Fluffington Post that she had frequently noticed Socks conked out in his chair while the line at his window stretched out the door.

At first, Meyer was impressed by Socks’ dedication to the DMV’s policy of delaying the process of renewing licenses and updating vehicle registrations as much as possible. She actually proposed a  nap-based employee training program the Illinois Department of Transportation based on Socks’ work style, but it was rejected.

“Turns out we have strict standards for government employees,” Meyer said. “We’re supposed to make it unpleasant to be here, but we do need to remain conscious while on the clock. Hey, now we know!”

Local Food Movement Starts to Take Hold in Cat Community

Mollie the cat is a regular fixture at the Green City Market in Chicago’s Lincoln Park. Vendors have started to easily recognize the black and white cat, who buys roughly half of her weekly food from local farmers.

“Mollie is really passionate about the local produce movement,” close friend Tina Sheldon told The Fluffington Post as the duo shopped for kale. “She’s got a hookup for the best dairy I’ve ever tasted.”

Mollie’s story is growing more common. According to data from the Pew Charitable Trusts, cats now account for 7% of all revenue at farmer’s markets and farm stands in North America. That might not seem like a lot, but it’s up five-fold in just two years.

There are some drawbacks to having a larger feline presence at food markets, however. 

Fishmonger Brandon Neczyn, who also sells at the Green City Market, recalls the first time he met Mollie.

“I was wrapping up some beautiful tuna steaks for a customer and out of nowhere, she launched herself at me,” he said. “I love that cats are starting to care about where their food comes from, but I really wonder if a fish market is a good place to have a bunch of hungry kitties around.”

Cats Declare Victory in War on Wrapping Paper

It was a long, hard fight, but on Saturday, Roswell and Rask were able to say with certainty that they had conquered their most diligent adversary.

“Yeah, that wrapping paper is as good as gone,” says Debra Flack, the cats’ owner. “We’ve tried our best to keep it from them, but there was no saving it this time.”

Roswell and Rask gained a significant foothold last March during the Battle of Timmy’s Eighth Birthday, when they laid waste to several enemy outposts.

“We almost switched to gift bags after that,” says Flack. “Looking back, we really should have. Cats don’t like bags, do they?”
