Doggy Street Artist Completes New Work

Sometimes, you have to bring the art to the people.
Baines the dog has been using that philosophy ever since he started tagging walls on the South Side of Chicago seven years ago. Since then, he’s moved on to bigger things: “Life’s Ruff,” his latest work, occupies an entire building facade in the Wicker Park neighborhood.
“Baines has always used art as a mirror for society,” says contemporary art critic Francine Holt. “That mirror typically has doggy things in it.”
“Life’s Ruff” is somewhat of a departure – the new piece features motifs not normally seen in the pooch’s portfolio.
“His sensibilities have definitely evolved,” says Holt of the work. “This one evokes the machine-like nature of the 21st century world, where altruism is trumped by greed, and the dollar rules with an iron fist. It’s honestly kind of a bummer – I hope he goes back to bones and tennis balls after this.”
The pup is rumored to be working on his next project, an interactive installation that will reportedly call attention to the plight of migrant farm workers.
