Health Advocates Complain About Puppy Content of Popcorn

A health watchdog group has lodged a complaint with the state about the puppy content of popcorn at a local movie theater chain.

“We’ve found that 1 in 10 tubs of popcorn sold at the company’s theaters contain a puppy,” said group spokesperson Georgina Steuben. “That’s more than allowed by the FDA.”

While adorable, claims Steuben, puppies are not very sanitary, and often roll in gross things they find outside.

No one at the theater company could be reached for comment.

Dogs to Star in New Buddy Cop Show

The Walt Disney Company has announced a new show for its summer lineup on the Disney Channel called Hooch and Hooch Jr. The buddy cop comedy follows the antics of two canine police officers – a father and son duo – as they solve crimes in the fictional town of Cypress Beach, California.

The show is a spin-off of the successful 1989 Tom Hanks comedy, Turner and Hooch, for which a separate pilot was made in the early 90s, but never produced. 

“We really just felt the humans were unnecessary,” said Disney spokesperson Cynthia Sizemore. “While Tom had great chemistry with the dog in the original movie, it didn’t translate to weekly TV. We think our two puppy co-stars more than hold their own on screen.”

Though the original movie starred a rare French mastiff breed, the two stars of the upcoming television series are boxers.

The show will begin airing on June 27.

Dog Finds Part-Time Work as Lion

The global recession has hit the dog community particularly hard, with unemployment currently hovering over 83%. With prospects for full-time work bleak, many puppies are turning to low-paying, part-time jobs to make ends meet.

“Most canine job growth we’re seeing is in the public sector,” said Harvard economist, Peter Kress. “Guide dogs, bomb- and drug-sniffing dogs, search and rescue dogs, etc. About the only growth area in the private sector is among therapy dogs, and even many of those are state subsidized in some way. On the whole, we’re not adding enough employment each quarter to keep up with the number of dogs looking for work.”

Employment for dogs at private companies in traditional areas like sled pulling, house guarding and cattle herding are at a 50 year low, according to Kress.

In Durham, North Carolina, one local dog has taken part-time work as a lion to make ends meet. The pup is being employed by a local acting troupe to perform at kids’ birthday parties.

“It’s not terrible work,” said Andy Gamber, a close friend of the dog. “But we’re really hoping things get better soon. He used to have a full-time job chasing mailmen, which he loved, but then the USPS laid him off.”
