Checkers knew about halfway through the night he was in trouble.
“He got this bug-eyed look, like he could feel his tummy gurgling,” says Miranda Inwell, who was enjoying an all-you-can eat clam and seafood buffet with the eager pup on Sunday.
“Then, wham, it hit him like a ton of bricks,” says Inwell. “Checkers didn’t come out of the bathroom that night. Way too risky.”

Usually school photos aren’t thought of as a competition, but when this year’s pictures came back last week, it was clear that Yaris the cat had won.
“He totally nailed it,” said school principal D. Wayne Travers. “I know I’m supposed to remain impartial, but I mean, the none of the other students were even close. It was basically Yaris, and then a bunch of kids whose parents should be embarrassed.”
Yaris chose the “colorful balls” background for the picture, which Stacy Kamisky, a photo tech who assisted with this year’s pictures, said was a significant risk.
“Not everyone can pull off that background,” she explained. “Usually we advise the kids to just go with plain blue or grey or maybe, maybe, that laser one. But Yaris was able to really make it work.”
Class superlatives will be announced next week, and Yaris is currently odds-on favorite to win “Most Likely to Succeed.”
