Hedgehog Appointed Spokespet for Strawberry Lobby

The International Association of Strawberry Growers has appointed a hedgehog as their spokespet, the group is set to announce at the BerryFest Conference this morning. 

“It’s an unusual choice for sure,” said professor of berry science at Duke University, Dr. Mike Mandelbaum.  "I don’t really see the connection, but the little guy sure is cute.  I mean, will I buy more strawberries as a result? Probably.  Oh… yeah, so I guess it is a good choice.“

Cat Supports Creation of U.S. Pirate Party

A politically-minded cat living in Brooklyn, NY named Winston has voiced his support for establishing a Pirate Party in the United States.   The designation used by a number of upstart political parties, which tend to stand for the ideals of free sharing of information, data privacy, direct democracy and civil rights, that have been catching on in many countries across Europe, most notably Sweden and Germany.

Though a Pirate Party does already exist in the United States, Winston feels now is the time to kick it into high gear.  

“The party holds no seats in congress right now at a national level, has no judicial appointments, and isn’t running anyone for president,” said Lars Rodriguez, a close friend of Winston.  "It’s time to start seriously running some candidates.  Winston is ready to pound the pavement in support.“

Red Pandas Concerned About the Spread of Google Chrome

The Red Panda Coalition, an advocacy group for red pandas, has issued a press release indicating their concern over the growth of Google’s Chrome web browser.  The browser now has, by some measures, over a third of the world’s market share and has been rising steadily since its introduction in 2008.  Firefox, meanwhile, has seen its growth decelerate in recent years and has been stagnant or declining over the past 12 months. This has the RPC concerned.

“What many people don’t realize,” said RPC spokesperson Maria Cueto, “is that Firefox was a real shot in the arm for the red panda job market.”

According to the RPC, Firefox accounts for over 45% of all red panda employment over the past decade.  "If Firefox continues to lose market share, it could be devastating to red pandas,“ said Cueto, who indicated that red panda unemployment has already started to creep back up above 10%.

Puppy Still Life Fetches Record at Auction

A photograph called “Still Life of a Puppy with Flowers” brought a record $22 million at auction this over the weekend.  Auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York, the print, which was a signed edition numbered one of three, is thought to have been sold for the highest price ever for a puppy-related photo.   The other two editions of the photograph are believed to have been destroyed in a fire, contributing to the high price.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Sotheby’s vice president of puppy memorabilia, Thurgood Smithely.  "It’s a fine specimen, and one that I think any collector would adore having.  But I never expected it to sell for so much.“

The auction house had priced the photo originally at $5.6 million, but a bidding war broke out that pushed the final value into the stratosphere.
