Kitten Puts Finishing Touches on Memoir
Though Evie the cat is only two years old, she’s already experienced a lot. There was the time the can opener broke, there was the incident with the toad that got into the basement, there was her harrowing run-in with the vacuum – just to name a few.
That’s why Evie has decided to put it all down on paper.
“She just finished off the first draft last night,” confirmed Joel Turtledove, acquisitions editor at HarperCollins, which gave the kitten a $250,000 advance – unheard of for a memoir of a relatively obscure figure.
“We think she’ll play well in the growing ‘stuff about pets’ market,” said Turtledove, citing the recent mega-successes of Boo, Grumpy Cat and Lil Bub.
The manuscript will now go into editing, and HarperCollins expects to release the book this fall.

German Shepherd Adopts Human Boy in Landmark Case
After nearly a year of court proceedings, a German shepherd named Cody has won the right to adopt a young boy who was displaced from his home in 2011.
“Cody has been caring for the boy for nearly two years, but when he decided to make it official, the adoption agency balked and the courts got involved,” says Tony Shek, Cody’s attorney. “For starters, he’s a single parent. Also, he’s a dog.”
Until this point, there had been no legal precedent for inter-species adoption of humans. “It’s very hard to make history in the court system. But we proved that Cody provides a loving and financially stable home, and that he is the best caregiver for the boy. Denial of his adoption rights would be tantamount to discrimination. We are thrilled with the outcome.”
Legal experts say the decision may have implications for a number of similar cases still pending.
