Area Cat Grows Own Salad Greens

In an effort to be more healthy in 2013, a local kitty named Suzy has taken the bold step of adding a salad to every meal.  But all those fresh greens and veggies were getting expensive.  That’s why friends say she built an elaborate hydroponic growing system in her basement.

“The people at the garden center took one look at her shopping cart and started to snicker,” said roommate Chloe Bale, who helped Suzy assemble the subterranean garden.  "I think they assumed she was growing pot.“

According to Bale, the cat is producing four heads of romaine lettuce each week, along with arugula, baby spinach, alfafa sprouts, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers.

Capuchin Monkey Doesn’t Know What to Think About Manti Te’o Story

Steve, a capuchin monkey who lives in Berkley, CA, is actually a University of Alabama fan, so he was definitely rooting against Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o in the BCS Championship game.  But Steve is also a Buffalo Bills fan, and he wants the Bills to have a good draft in April.

Currently, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has Te’o predicted to go eighth to the Bills, who ranked second-to-last in rush defense in 2012.

“He’s monitoring the situation,” said close friend Jim Vitale. “He doesn’t know what to think about Te’o – whether he was complicit or just a victim.  Steve doesn’t think it’s his place to judge.  But as a football fan, he he really just hopes nothing changes that might cause Te’o to fall further in the draft.”

REPORT: Newborn Retriever Pups Already Have Vacation Plans

CNN is reporting that a litter of golden retriever puppies, just a few days old, have already made plans to “get out of Dodge” and escape January’s bitter winter weather.

“They were so warm and toasty before they were born,” Millie Caldwell told the cable news network. “Then they came out and were like, ‘what the f*** is this? It’s freezing! People live here?’ One of them figured out Expedia and they booked a flight to Miami.”

There’s no official word yet as to their plans once they arrive, but sources say a poolside cabana may be involved.

Area Dog Gets Up Early to Watch Presidential Inauguration

According to friends, Hanky the dog got up early to watch the U.S. presidential inauguration this morning.  The official swearing in is occurring on Sunday morning – Hanky plans to watch the liveblog on Politico, with all the big public inaugural festivities on Monday, which he’ll watch on YouTube.

“He never misses any big presidential event,” says friend Mary Aushultz.  "Political conventions, debates, election night, the inauguration, the state of the union… it doesn’t matter. If it involves a president or presidential candidate, he’s plopped on the couch with CNN on.“

And what if anyone tries to change it to something else?  Say, playoff football?  "Oh he won’t have any of that,” says Aushultz.  "I mean, he won’t bite or anything, he’s a good dog.  But if you change the channel, he’ll just give you the most withering stare.“

"I tried to tell him the parade isn’t until tomorrow,” Auchultz continued, “but he just gave me that stare.”
