Hedgehog Reporter Scores Exclusive Interview with Santa
In what is being called a major coup for news magazine show 60 Minutes, rookie reporter Darcy the hedgehog has scored an exclusive interview with Santa Claus in the run-up to Christmas. The interview was recorded in November and includes a rare tour of Santa’s North Pole toy workshop and multiple sit-down segments, both alone and with the usually-media-shy Mrs. Claus.
The interview could distract from a string of recent scandals that have beset the venerable news show. October’s report on the attacks on the U.S. embassy in Benghazi relied on a faulty witness and appeared to be timed to promote a book published by a company owned by CBS (which broadcasts 60 Minutes), a clear conflict of interest. In November, the show aired a report on the NSA that industry pundits criticized for being a “puff piece.”
Some think that the Santa interview – the first that the big man has granted in over a decade – could soften the blow from those two controversies.
Others are less sure. Tad Walstone, a media reporter for the website Digiday, points to the poorly received Amazon delivery drone report that many accused of just being free advertising for Amazon before Cyber Monday – the biggest online shopping day of the year.
“It really depends on what sort of questions Darcy asks,” said Walstone. “This could just be another piece of 60 Minutes fluff.”
The interview will air in a special episode of the show on Christmas night.
