Study: Cats Prefer Eating Paper Books to eBooks

October 7, 2015 · Leave a Comment

Score another win for traditional paper books. As ebook sales slip and the number of independent bookstores continues to rise, many in the publishing industry say the death of the traditional printed book has been wildly exaggerated.

A new study from researchers at the Association of Independent Book Publishers adds yet another piece of good news for fans of the printed word. The study found that cats prefer to eat traditional paper books to electronic books by an almost 8-to-1 margin.

“We found that cats just don’t like the taste or the ‘mouth feel’ of e-readers,” said study author Taryn Steiner. “We did find that cats prefer e-readers for other reasons – namely for sitting on – but that likely won’t impact for individual e-book sales in any positive way.”

Further study is still needed to determine how feline attitudes toward book formats affect sales.
