Puppy Still Life Fetches Record at Auction
A photograph called “Still Life of a Puppy with Flowers” brought a record $22 million at auction this over the weekend. Auctioned by Sotheby’s in New York, the print, which was a signed edition numbered one of three, is thought to have been sold for the highest price ever for a puppy-related photo. The other two editions of the photograph are believed to have been destroyed in a fire, contributing to the high price.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Sotheby’s vice president of puppy memorabilia, Thurgood Smithely. ”It’s a fine specimen, and one that I think any collector would adore having. But I never expected it to sell for so much.”
The auction house had priced the photo originally at $5.6 million, but a bidding war broke out that pushed the final value into the stratosphere.
